About this Walk

The Hillhurst Sunnyside Community Association will co-host this walk with neighbours, industry and city-builders as we tell the story of Hillhurst Sunnyside, exploring its evolution from one of the first suburbs in Calgary to its present-day charm as a vibrant and close-knit urban village.

Our theme? Adding “gentle” housing density to historic neighborhoods (via laneway housing, row housing, multi-residential buildings and restoring/renovating existing housing stock) while respecting the character and rhythm of the 100+ year old community. We’ll speak on benefits also: affordability, creating rentals, mortgage helpers, extended families, and aging-in-place.

We have a unique family connection with Ms. Jacobs as you will learn on this walking tour. This is a free walking tour, run by volunteers to showcase what we love about our community. We look forward to sharing and learning more on this topic with you! We hope to meet you in Hillhurst Sunnyside!

We will take a picnic break at containR (1020 2 Ave NW) so bring some picnic food! We will then continue on to check out the role of place-making using art in the overlooked and underappreciated laneways of the city as we await the Sunnyside Garage Art Tour, which starts at 1:45pm. We hope you’ll join us for both walks, but that’s optional of course.
