Lead a Walk or Become a Volunteer

Jane Jacobs was passionate about community and city life. If you are too, why not design, and lead a walk through your favourite part of Calgary?

Who can lead a Walk?

Anyone can lead a Jane’s Walk if they have insight to share and enjoy good conversation.

What makes a walk a Jane’s Walk?

Jane’s Walks are often walking tours, but they can also be bike rides, poetry readings, performance art, games, and more! There are three things that make a Jane’s Walk a Jane’s Walk:

  1. Jane’s Walks are free, volunteer-led, and open to everyone. There is no registration, fee, or donation associated with leading or participating in a Jane’s Walk. And there’s no cancellation; these are all-weather walks.
  2. Jane’s Walks are non-commercial and non-partisan. They cannot be used to promote a business or a candidate running for office.
  3. Jane’s Walks are dialogues that seek to engage participants in conversation. While walk leaders set out the route and have lots to share, they want conversation and participation too.

How Do I Get Started?

Once you’ve decided to lead a walk, you need to plan a route, develop some talking points for each of your walk stops, create a walk listing, and – once we accept your walk into our festival program – spread the word about it in your community. Here’s: How to Lead a Jane’s Walk in 5 Simple Steps.
